Chronicles of the Met Gala: Chapter VI.

La primavera, en términos generales, siempre logra despertar una sensación de júbilo que contrasta con el largo e implacable invierno. Los pájaros cantan, el sol despunta y los jardines florecen formando un aura de ensueño que recuerda a los paisajes más románticos de Claude Lorrain. En términos científicos, la estación da comienzo el vigésimo día de marzo, para los amantes de la moda el acontecimiento que hace despegar a la Primavera no arriba hasta el primer lunes de mayo, en el cual tiene lugar la espectacular, la inimitable, la única, la fantástica… (si, lo habéis adivinado) ¡Met Gala! No sólo se concentran durante la fecha el éxtasis de la anual reunión en el metropolitano, sino también los nacidos bajo la estela taurina y por supuesto, lo que ha sido (y continuará siendo) un recurrente tema de conversación en esta plataforma: la embriagadora esperanza de los días cálidos que en lo que a la alfombra roja concierne, se traduce en el anhelo de ver esta euforia plasmada en los atuendos de nuestros personajes favoritos.

WEn esta ocasión hacemos un pequeño viaje en el tiempo que nos devuelve a 2017, un año marcado por la singularidad de la temática, pues no se rendía homenaje a través de esta a un diseñador en vida desde que en 1983 se le brindó dicho reconocimiento a la genialidad de Yves Saint Laurent.

Hace cinco años, fue la célebre diseñadora Rei Kawakubo, también conocida como la madre del balance. Este seudónimo viene gracias al equilibrio que muestran los diseños elaborados para su marca Comme de Garçons (cuyo significado directo se traduce a: “como los chicos”).

En primera instancia, no es precisamente la armonía lo que los volúmenes propios de la marca inspiran en el espectador, sino una sensación de desproporción, que incluso me aventuró a categorizar como inquietante. Son conceptos tan sometidos a subjetividad que su naturaleza roza lo abstracto, y es precisamente el arte de tomar dos de estos y fusionarlos en una creación capaz de reflejarlos a ambos lo que hace de la japonesa un prodigio novedoso. Dicho en otras palabras, la maestría de Kawakubo no se fundamenta en el deconstructivismo, sino en la superposición de materiales conocidos para dar paso a lo nunca visto.

Un claro ejemplo, es el nombre escogido para encabezar la casa de alta costura, el cual posee un mensaje trascendental que apela a lo sinsabores de la desigualdad de género que aun a día de hoy acontecen a las mujeres en el mundo de la moda. Aunque superficialmente siempre se ha tomado todo lo concerniente a la vestimenta como una afiliación frívola a cuyo encanto solo sucumben las mujeres, lo cierto es que los verdaderos mandos de la industria llevan siendo manipulados durante más tiempo del creído por hombres, pues dirigir a las féminas continúa siendo el pasatiempo favorito de la masculinidad frágil. No obstante, gracias a iconos como Rei Kawakubo, la representación del trabajo desarrollado por mujeres cada vez gana mayor visibilidad, reconocimiento y oportunidades y es por este motivo por el que la diseñadora tomó un nombre que pone sobre la mesa la eficacia tradicionalmente otorgada a los hombres mientras que la jugadora que presenta las cartas desafía la normativa preconcebida, haciendo de ello una satírica mezcla entre los roles de ambos sexos.

Ya con esta breve descripción la esencia de la creatividad movilizando Comme des Garçons puede ser comprendida, y por tanto es posible juzgar si los atuendos de la velada de veras hacen justicia a la temática: Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garçons: el arte del intermedio.

Por tanto, he aquí las finalistas de mi aclamado concurso de los mejores vestidos, y como no podía ser de otro modo, Rihanna figura entre las galardonadas. Siguiendo su habitual patrón de conducta, la cantante de Rude boy llegó al festejo formando el gran revuelo que tanto su persona como su vestido merecen. La forma en que los volúmenes del atuendo evocan la delicadeza de una flor a la vez que la animosidad del confeti constituye una degustación de la estética de Rei Kawakubo que el descubrir que precisamente lleva inscrito en la etiqueta Comme des Garçons no resulta en ningún caso, sorprendente.

También bajo la estela del triunfo y haciendo compañía en el podio a Rihanna, encontramos a Tracee Ellie Ross, quien portando igualmente un estilismo de la firma francesa que fue el epicentro de la gala, hizo mella entre los invitados gracias a la complicidad entre la silueta sinuosa y el color vibrante del look.

Ahora bien, todo Ying tiene un Yang y durante el uno de mayo de 2017, las encargadas de inclinar el otro lado de la balanza fueron Gisele Bünchen y Jennifer López. La súper modelo, que lucía una de las creaciones de Stella McCartney, no optó por tomar riesgo alguno. Su vestido con apreturas plateado podría considerarse como una buena opción para otros eventos más recatados, pero en este caso sólo atiende a un adjetivo: aburrido.

La segunda nombrada, es decir, la multifacética “JLo” escogió una hermosa capa la cual, a pesar de la frescura que invocaba gracias a la fluidez del tejido y la suavidad de la paleta cromática elegida, no tiene nexo alguno con el tema de la noche, al fin y al cabo, ir a la Met sin atender al código de vestimenta es como acudir a la iglesia sin creer en Dios.

Spring, in general terms, always manages to awaken a feeling of joy that contrasts with the long and relentless winter. The birds sing, the sun rises and gardens bloom, forming a dreamlike aura reminiscent of Claude Lorrain's most romantic landscapes. In scientific terms, the season begins on the twentieth day of March, for fashion lovers however, the event that makes Spring take off does not arrive until the first Monday in May, in which takes place the spectacular, the inimitable, the showstopper, the fantastic… (yes, you guessed it) Met Gala! Not only the ecstasy of the annual meeting in the metropolitan museum is concentrated during the date, but also those born under the Taurus zodiac and of course, what has been (and will continue to be) a recurring topic of conversation on this platform: the intoxicating hope from the hot days that as far as the red carpet is concerned, it translates into the longing to see this euphoria embodied in the outfits of our favorite celebrities.

On this occasion we take a little trip back in time all the way to 2017, a year marked by the uniqueness of the theme, since no tribute had been paid through it to a living designer since 1983, when said recognition was given to the genius of Yves Saint Laurent.

Five years ago, it celebrated designer, Rei Kawakubo, also known as the mother of balance. This pseudonym comes thanks to the equanimity shown by the designs made for her brand: Comme de Garçons (whose direct meaning translates to: "like the boys").

At first instance, it is not precisely harmony that the brand's own volumes inspire in the viewer, but rather a feeling of disproportion, which I even ventured to categorize as disturbing. They are concepts so bound to subjectivity that their nature borders on the abstract, and it is precisely the art of taking two of these and merging them into a creation capable of reflecting both of them, that makes the Japanese a novel prodigy. In other words, Kawakubo's mastery is not based on deconstructivism, but on the superimposition of known materials to give way to the never have been seen before.

A clear example is the name chosen to head the haute couture house, which has a transcendental message that appeals to the unpleasantness of gender inequality that even today befalls women in the world of fashion. Although superficially everything related to clothing has always been taken as a frivolous affiliation to whose charm only women succumb, the truth is that the true commands of the industry have been manipulated for longer than believed, by men. Since controlling women continues to be the favorite pastime of fragile masculinity. Nonetheless, thanks to icons such as Rei Kawakubo, the representation of the work carried out by women is gaining more and more visibility, recognition and opportunities. And it is for this reason that the designer took on a name that puts on the table the efficiency traditionally granted to men, while the player who presents the cards defies the preconceived norm, making it a satirical mix between the roles of both sexes.

So, here are the finalists of my acclaimed best dressed contest, and how it could not be otherwise, Rihanna is among the winners. Following her usual pattern of behavior, the singer of Rude boy arrived at the celebration creating the great stir that both her person and her dress deserve. The way in which the volumes of the outfit evoke the delicacy of a flower while the animosity of confetti, constitutes a small taste of Rei Kawakubo's aesthetics. So discovering that it is precisely inscribed on the label Comme des Garçons does not result in any case, surprising.

Also in the wake of victory and keeping Rihanna company on the podium, we find Tracee Ellie Ross, who also wearing a style from the French firm that was the epicenter of the gala, made a dent among the guests thanks to the complicity between the sinuous silhouette and the vibrant color of the look.

Now, every Ying has a Yang and during May 1, 2017, those in charge of tipping the other side of the scale were Gisele Bünchen and Jennifer López. The super model, who wore one of Stella McCartney's creations, did not choose to take any risks. Her silver dress with cut outs could be considered a good option for other more demure events, but in this case it only attends to one adjective: boring.
