Poniendo la Met Gala en contexto:

El pasado lunes tuvo lugar la famosa Met Gala, de la cual hemos hablado en ocasiones anteriores siguiendo los capítulos de las Crónicas de la Met, y esta edición del mundialmente aclamado evento ha dejado muchos puntos que analizar y comentar, pero antes de sumergirnos de lleno a ello, he considerado oportuno dedicar un artículo previo a poner en perspectiva al acontecimiento, pues si bien cada una de estas fiestas disponen de una esencia única e irremplazable, la celebrada este 2 de mayo tiene aún un argumento a su favor que hace de ella una excepción a la regla, es la segunda gala celebrada en un periodo de tiempo menor a un año.

Por supuesto, la crítica hacia los atuendos expuestos ante las cámaras también llegará a su debido tiempo (el cual os puedo asegurar no será mucho), pero es necesario contextualizar antes de juzgar, y precisamente de eso trata la entrada de hoy. Si hacemos memoria, nos será fácil recordar que la velada de 2021 tubo como temática: En America: un léxico de la moda, sobre la cual podemos encontrar información más detallada en la siguiente publicación: https://creativitymidstchaos.blogspot.com/2021/10/chronicles-of-met-gala-chapter-ii.html, pero en resumidas cuentas se podría decir que fue un amago de demostrar un patriotismo inexistente por parte del pueblo estadounidense hacia un sistema corrupto, que a pesar de sus promesas continúa discriminando en base a la raza, el género, la sexualidad, la religión u otras cualidades inertes al ser humano.

El director del museo MET, Andrew Bolton, declaró que las intenciones del comité al proponer este código de vestimenta era el patentar la unión que forma lo que es la ciudadanía americana, ampliar el diccionario estilístico empleado al describir la moda del país y dar una respuesta a la pregunta: “¿Qué significa ser americano?” Esto, a mis ojos, más que un intento de forjar un diálogo más tolerante e inclusivo parece una evidencia de la incapacidad de empatizar de los grupos más privilegiados ante la crisis socio-cultural que, aunque lleva activa tantos siglos como la conciencia del ser humano, ha pasado a estar de nuevo entre las principales preocupaciones de aquellos consternados ante la defectuosa normativa por la que la sociedad actual se rige. Las personas se enorgullecerán de su país cuando los líderes de este les den motivos para hacerlo, y no viceversa.

Ahora bien, en sucesión de este primer tópico, encontramos que el seleccionado para el 2022 pone a los Estados Unidos en el punto de mira de nuevo, pero esta vez lo hace desde una perspectiva más enriquecedora. A día de hoy todos conocemos EEUU como uno de los magnates de la moda más importantes del mundo, el cual inclusive dispone en sus dominios de una de las capitales más relevantes para este sector: Nueva York, pero el levantamiento de este imperio estilístico fue más costoso de lo que a primera vista pueda parecer, pues en sus inicios la moda americana se consideraba una copia poco refinada de la grandeza parisina. Por lo que En America: una antología de la moda, es una interesante recapitulación de la evolución que las tendencias originarias de dicho país han experimentado.

Aunque la inmigración continúe siendo un tabú, este asunto da pie a que cada diseñador pueda nutrirse de la basta historia de transeúntes que han cruzado las tierras del país dejando su huella en forma de siluetas y accesorios. Además, el poseer un conocimiento más quisquilloso de las raíces de lo que es hoy el sector de la moda, nos aventaja a la hora de emplear aquellos recursos que apreciamos y realizar cambios en los aspectos de esta que necesitan reformarse en función de los valores presentes.

Protesta en favor de la inmigración 

“Gilded glamour” (glamour dorado) es más concretamente el foco de atención que se ha depositado sobre el extenso recorrido de la moda americana, por lo que el siglo dorado de Estados Unidos que ocupó las últimas décadas del s. XIX así como las primeras del XX, y más relevantemente los ajuares propios de la época son el canon que ha regido la inspiración de los conjuntos de la noche.

Algunas de prendas más significativas del periodo fueron: los corpiños; los guantes; los contornos en forma de reloj de arena; un corte hasta el suelo de los vestidos; los escotes bajos en forma de corazón; y en lo que a aderezo respecta los lazos, botones, encajes, volantes y ornamentos de cristal. Aunque si se os dificulta el imaginaros piezas de vestimenta similares a las descritas, afortunadamente podéis recurrir a la aclamada serie: La Edad dorada de HBO max donde una historia basada en hechos reales toma el cariz más exquisito posible.

Putting the Met Gala in context:

Last Monday the famous Met Gala took place, which we have talked about on previous occasions following the chapters of the Chronicles of the Met, and this edition of the world acclaimed event has left many points to analyze and comment on, but before immersing ourselves fully I have considered it opportune to dedicate a previous article to put the event in perspective, because although each of these festivities has a unique and irreplaceable essence, the one celebrated this May 2 still has an argument in its favor that makes it an exception to the rule, it is the second gala held in a period shorter than a year. Of course, the criticism towards the outfits exposed before the cameras will also come in due time (which I can assure you will not be much), but it is necessary to contextualize before judging, and that is precisely what today's entry is about.

Now, in succession to this first topic, we find that the one selected for 2022 puts the United States in the spotlight again, but this time it does so from a more enriching perspective. Today we all know the US as one of the most important fashion tycoons in the world, which even has one of the most relevant capitals of the sector: New York, but the rise of this stylistic empire was more complex than it may seem at first glance, for in its early days American fashion was seen as a crude copy of Parisian grandeur. Therefore, In America: A Fashion Anthology is an interesting recapitulation of the evolution that trends originating in that country have experienced.

Although immigration continues to be a taboo, this issue allows each designer to draw on the vast history of passers-by who have crossed the lands of the country, leaving their mark in the form of silhouettes and accessories. In addition, having a more meticulous knowledge of the roots of what the fashion sector is today, gives us an advantage when it comes to using those resources that we appreciate and making changes in the aspects of it that need to be updated based on present values.
