Chronicles of the Met Gala: Chapter III.

Feliz jueves queridos lectores, y bienvenidos al tercer capítulo de mi extensa serie a cerca de los “Oscars de la moda”. En la primera entrada dedicada a este tópico me volqué a explicar los origenes del evento y algunos detalles importantes para los principiantes en el mundo de la moda o incluso aquellos más avanzados en este que todavía se encontraban perdidos (en mayor o menor medida) sobre la exclusiva (https://creativitymidstchaos.blogspot.com/2021/08/chronicles-of-met-gala-chapter-i.html); posteriormente me dispuse a analizar la velada celebrada en el museo MET este año tras dos años de expectación causados por la pandemia (https://creativitymidstchaos.blogspot.com/2021/10/chronicles-of-met-gala-chapter-ii.html).

No obstante, he de confesar que al disponerme a escribir la tercera parte de esta reseña estilística me encontré algo perturbado por la incertidumbre que elegir el orden cronológico adecuado me provocaba ¿Es necesario ceñirse al transcurso natural de los hechos remontándonos hasta 1948? ¿Podría aventurarme hacia el desorden escogiendo aleatoriamente la fiesta que debo tratar en este texto? ¿A caso es mandatorio que me rija por las tendencias del momento escogiendo así la fecha adecuada, dado que la moda se basa en un bucle de reciclaje constante? Estas son algunas de las preguntas que me han estado atenaceando los últimos días hasta que me di de bruces con la opción que más me complacía. Es popular el decir “jamás mires atrás”, pero al mismo lo tiempo es el dicho de “nunca digas nunca” y por ello que aunque retroceder en el camino no suele ser una decisión acertada, en este caso se aplica a la perfección ¿Locura o ingenio? El estudiar el presente para entender el pasado. Por esta regla de tres es que hoy, 2 de diciembre, os encontráis con una publicación sobre la Gala celebrada en 2019.

Hace un par de años tuvimos la que inconscientemente sería la última celebración de lo que concebimos como la normalidad en el ayer, antes de hacer de las mascarillas, la distancia social y las vacunas parte de nuestra rutina diaria. Quizás uno de los factores que mayor revuelo causó a cerca del acontecimiento fuera (una vez más) la temática, pues al escuchar la palabra camp (traducción: campamento) muy probablemente visualicemos hogueras, tiendas de campaña, actividades al aire libre y veranos dominados por picaduras de mosquitos en lugar de a Lady Gaga desvistiéndose en la alfombra rosa hasta quedar en ropa interior de brillantina.

Sin embargo, no es Anna Wintour y su séquito quienes han cometido un error selectivo pues naturalmente camp tiene un significado alternat en la jerga de la indumentaria, reflejando en verdad lo que es la incomodidad visual o en otras palabras el mal gusto que a su vez es un camino hacia la concepcion de la belleza artística. El único inconveniente carecen de la sensibilidad necesaria para apreciar dicha hermosura, pero eso no implica que no esté ahí.

Desde mi perspectiva los diseñadores hicieron un excelente trabajo ejecutando la tarea encomendada en términos generales, uno de los de los ejemplos que se merecen mención honorífica por su completa complexión dotada de modernidad ( el exceso y los recortes del vestido la aportaron armoniosamente) y tradición ( encarnada por las atemporales joyas siempre adecuado negro) sea el atuendo de Moschino lucido por la modelo Bella Hadid.

Por otro lado es correcto afirmar que todos quedamos estupefactos al ver como el galardonado actor Jared Leto arribaba en Gucci con su cabeza bien alta y una réplica de esta en su mano, lo cual no es algo que encaje con lo que se escenifica comúnmente como chic pero es irrefutablemente feroz.

Como cabe esperar, en todas las funciones hay siempre un personaje defectuoso y la Met Gala no es excepción alguna por lo que es irremediable encontrarnos con casos como el de Penelope Cruz, quien a pesar de haber acudido como la viva imagen de la elegancia con su vestido de Chanel no cumplió con el régimen de vestimenta.

Harry Styles, el conocido cantante aún siendo idolatrado tanto por su voz como por su estilo dejó al público con las ganas de ver su lado más explosivo al portar un total look negro de Gucci.

O la ex pareja conformada por Kanye West (en Dickies) y Kim Kardashian (en Thierry Mugler) que no parecieron haber entendido muy bien el propósito de camp al parecer un profesor de educación física y un implante de silicona respectivamente.

Happy Thursday dear readers, and welcome to the third chapter of my extensive series about the "Oscars of fashion." In the first post dedicated to this topic I went over to explain the origins of the event and some important details for beginners in the world of fashion or even those more advanced in it who were still lost (to a greater or lesser extent) on the exclusive (https://creativitymidstchaos.blogspot.com/2021/08/chronicles-of-met-gala-chapter-i.html); later I analyzed the evening held at the MET museum this year after two years of anticipation caused by the pandemic (https://creativitymidstchaos.blogspot.com/2021/10/chronicles-of-met-gala-chapter-ii.htlm).

However, I must confess that when I was preparing to write the third part of this stylistic review I found myself somewhat disturbed by the uncertainty that choosing the appropriate chronological order caused me. Is it necessary to stick to the natural course of events going back to 1948? Could I venture into disorder by randomly choosing the party that I should treat in this text? Is it mandatory for me to follow the trends of the moment, thus choosing the appropriate date, given that fashion is based on a constant recycling loop? These are some of the questions that had been haunting me in the recent days until I came face to face with the option that pleased me the most. It is popular to say "never look back", but at the same time the saying of "never say never"  and that is why, although going back on the road is not usually a correct decision, in this case it applies perfectly. Madness or wit? Studying the present to understand the past. By this hypothesis today, December 2, you come across a publication about the Gala held in 2019.

A couple of years ago we had what would unconsciously be the last celebration of what we conceived as normality yesterday, before making masks, social distancing and vaccinations part of our daily routine. Perhaps one of the factors that caused the greatest stir about the event was (once again) the theme, because when we hear the word camp, we will most likely visualize bonfires, tents, outdoor activities and summers dominated by mosquito bites instead of Lady Gaga stripping on the pink carpet into her glittery underwear.

However, it is not Anna Wintour and her entourage who have made a selective mistake this time, because naturally camp has an alternative meaning in the jargon of clothing, truly reflecting what is visual discomfort or in other words bad taste that in turn it is a path towards the conception of artistic beauty. The only drawback is that most people lack the necessary sensitivity to appreciate this beauty, but that does not imply that it is not there.

From my perspective the designers did an excellent job executing the task entrusted in general terms, one of the examples that deserves honorable mention for its complete complexion endowed with modernity (excess and cuts in the dress contributedto this harmoniously) and tradition ( embodied by the timeless jewels and the always suitable black) is the Moschino outfit worn by the model Bella Hadid.

On the other hand it is correct to say that we were all astonished to see how the award-winning actor Jared Leto arrived in Gucci with his head held high and a replica of it in his hand, which is not something that fits with what is commonly staged as chic but irrefutably fierce.

As can be expected, in all functions there is always a defective character and the Met Gala is no exception, so it is irremediable to find cases like Penelope Cruz, who despite looking as the spitting image of elegance with her Chanel dress did not comply with the dress regime.

Harry Styles, the well-known singer, idolized by both his voice and his style, left the public wanting to see his most explosive side by wearing a total black Gucci look.

Or the former couple, Kanye West (in Dickies) and Kim Kardashian (in Thierry Mugler) who apparently did not seem to understand the purpose of camp very well, could have been easily confused with a physical education teacher and a silicone implant respectively.
