Smells like…(teen spirit?)

Un accesorio invisible:

Uno de los primeros recuerdos que atesoró en mi memoria es la inconfundible fragancia de mi madre. Cuando me amodorraba junto a su pecho escuchando el latir de su corazón o cuando me levantaba extática en sus brazos a la salida de la guardería, el dulce olor que inhalaba era siempre el mismo: Chanel n°5.

Pero si la preguntasen cuál es el perfume que ha definido mi niñez, sin duda alguna, tendría que decir que fueron los chamuscados cigarrillos de Fortuna que mi padre acostumbrara a fumar los que dieron forma a este periodo inicial de mi vida. Por supuesto, son innumerables los matices que puedo vincular a mi infancia, desde la hierba recién cortada por la que me aventuraba como un animalillo indomable hasta los crayones que se amontonaban en mi estuche sin ton ni son; pero era el ceniciento humo emanando incansablemente de entre los labios (y ocasionalmente de su nariz cuando suplicaba que hiciese el “truco del toro”) de mi padre el elemento que permanecía de fondo a cada instancia.

A donde quiero llegar con este nostálgico relato es al motivo por el cual opino que el accesorio más distintivo que una persona puede portar es precisamente uno que no atiende a las demandas visuales por las que se rige la moda; un collar o un bolso pueden fácilmente hechizar miradas pero la intangibilidad de un aroma es algo capaz de crear una huella imborrable en nuestro entorno. En mi caso, siempre que llega a mis papilas olfativas una brisa entumecida por el primer perfume ideado por Coco Chanel, una parte de mi abandona el momento presente y se transporta de nuevo a la edad de la inocencia.

Con esto en mente, pocas palabras más se necesitan para transmitir el valor de escoger una fragancia que represente nuestra personalidad y envíe el mensaje sobre nuestra persona adecuado, y el primer paso para emprender una búsqueda fructífera es determinar algo aparentemente sencillo: ¿Cuántos? La mayoría incluso pasan esta cuestión por alto, pero la cantidad de esencias de las que disponer ya dice mucho de nuestra forma de ser.

Por ejemplo, aquellos que no se conformen a un mismo olor y se decanten por una inacabable cata de colonias dan a entender que la volatilidad, la espontaneidad e incluso el rechazo a los compromisos son facetas claves en su forma de visualizar la vida.

Mientras tanto, ceñirse estrictamente a un único aroma demuestra una forma de ser rígida, disciplinaria y meticulosa.

O por ejemplo, los que se hayan en un punto más neutral, como quienes optan por tener una fragancia para el día y otra distinta para la noche dan a entender que el equilibrio, la tensión a los detalles y la imparcialidad ocupan un papel fundamental en sus valores.

Una vez tengamos claro en que categoría entra nuestras necesidades olfativas, podemos proceder a analizar con detenimiento la jerarquía de un perfume. En la base de la pirámide encontramos el componente más duradero de todos, lo que se denominan notas de fondo; tardan seis horas desde la aplicación en ser perceptibles y sin embargo su presencia puede tardar en disiparse hasta un día entero. En este particular, la intensidad y la profundidad son los objetivos que buscan alcanzarse ya que aportarán fortaleza al producto final; entre los más comunes están las escalas amaderadas (Oud Immortel- Byredo), las ambaradas (Libre- Yves Saint Laurent) y las almizcladas (NARCISO Ambrée- Narciso Rodriguez).

A continuación, con un plazo de duración menos extenso, observamos como tras los quince minutos iniciales las notas de corazón brotan a la superficie, quedándose junto a nosotros hasta un maximo de seis horas. Como bien indica su nombre, estas componen el alma del afeite ya que son las que realmente se ocupan de moldear su identidad y por como consecuencia también constituyen la sección mas compleja de la anatomía del perfume pues esconde gran variedad de matices que culminan en un resultado verdaderamente único. Algunos de los favoritos del público son las delicadas flores (Daisy- Marc Jacobs) o la dulzura frutada (Born in Roma- Valentino).

Finalmente, alcanzamos el la cima de la montaña con la porción más efímera de las fragancias, aquellas notas con la responsabilidad de causar una buena primera impresión, las de salida, que revolotean en el aire durante los primitos diez minutos y se desvanecen seguidamente tan fugazmente como llegaron a nuestro olfato. En este caso, las pinceladas más codiciados en la industria abarcan desde los cítricos (Eau de Givenchy- Givenchy), los aromáticos (Le Parfum Royal- Elie Saab)y los verdes (Versense Eau de Toilette-Versace).

El último paso a seguir sería encontrar continuaciones armoniosas entre la extensa recolección de aromas disponibles en el mercado ya que de otro modo, acabaríamos con un olor que lejos de resultar agradable y atractivo, causa horribles jaquecas.

Es posible que tanta información y los enredados pasos a seguir para obtener el perfume ideal resulte en algo sobrestimulantes, pero afortunadamente, siempre hay profesionales del campo perfumista dispuestos a prestar sus servicios, aunque ir con un concepto claro de lo que se quiere (y lo que no) siempre aumenta las posibilidades de hallar la pareja olfativa perfecta.

An invisible accessory:

One of the first memories that I treasure in my memory is the unmistakable fragrance of my mother. When I would doze next to her chest to the rhythmical sound of her heartbeat or when she would lift me up ecstatic in her arms on the way out of the nursery, the sweet smell that came to me was always the same: Chanel n°5.

But if I were to say which is the scent that has defined my childhood, without a doubt, I would have to say that it was the charred Fortuna cigarettes that my father used to smoke that shaped this initial period of my life. Of course, there are innumerable nuances that I can link to my childhood, from the freshly cut grass through which I ventured like an indomitable little animal to the crayons that piled up in my pencil case without reason; but it was the ashy smoke emanating tirelessly from between his lips (and occasionally from his nose when ever I begged him to do the “bull trick”) of my father that remained in the background at every instance.

Where I want to get to with this nostalgic story is the reason why I think that the most distinctive accessory that a person can wear is precisely one that does not meet the visual demands by which fashion is governed; a necklace or a bag can easily bewitch looks, but the intangibility of a scent is something capable of creating an indelible mark on our surroundings. For me, whenever a numb breeze from Coco Chanel's first perfume hits my olfactory buds, a part of me leaves the present moment and is transported back to the age of innocence.

With this in mind, few more words are needed to convey the value of choosing a fragrance that represents our personality and sends the right message about ourselves, and the first step in undertaking a successful search is to determine something seemingly simple: How many? Most even ignore this question, but the amount of essences we use in our day to day life already says a lot about our way of being.

For example, those who do not conform to the same scent and opt for an endless tasting of colognes imply that volatility, spontaneity and even rejection of commitment are key facets in their way of visualizing life.

Once we are clear in which category our olfactory needs fall into, we can proceed to carefully analyze the hierarchy of a perfume. At the base of the pyramid we find the most durable component of all, what are called base notes; they take six hours from the moment of application to be noticeable, and yet their presence can take up to a whole day to dissipate. In this particular, intensity and depth are the objectives that seek to be achieved since they will provide strength to the final product. Among the most common ones, are the woody scales (Oud Immortel- Byredo), the amber ones (Libre- Yves Saint Laurent) and the musky ones (NARCISO Ambrée- Narciso Rodriguez).

Next, with a shorter duration, we observe how after the initial fifteen minutes the heart notes sprout to the surface, staying with us for a maximum of six hours. As its name indicates, these make up its soul since they are the ones that really take care of shaping its identity and as a consequence they also constitute the most complex section of the perfumes anatomy since it hides a great variety of nuances that culminate in a result truly unique. Some of the public favorites are the delicacy of flowers (Daisy- Marc Jacobs) or the fruity sweetness (Born in Roma- Valentino).

To finalice, we reach the top of the mountain with the most ephemeral portion of the fragrances, those notes with the responsibility of making a good first impression, those of departure, which flutter in the air for the first ten minutes and then vanish as fleetingly as they came. In this case, the most coveted brushstrokes in the industry range from citrus (Eau de Givenchy- Givenchy), aromatics (Le Parfum Royal-Elie Saab) and greens (Versense Eau de Toilette-Versace).

The last step to follow would be to find harmonious combinations among the extensive collection of aromas available on the market, since otherwise, we would end up with a scent that, far from being pleasant and attractive, causes horrible headaches.

It is possible that so much information and the tangled procedures aimed to obtain the ideal perfume result in something overstimulating, but fortunately, there are always professionals in the perfume field disposed to provide their services, although going with a clear concept of what you want (and what you don't) always increases the chances of finding your perfect match.
