How ugly sweaters* stole Christmas.

Esta empezando a parecer navidad:

Luces de colores, villancicos, belenes, polvorones, árboles, muñecos de nieve, y por supuesto…¡Moda! ¿Qué sería de las festividades navideñas sin los vestidos de lentejuelas o las corbatas rojas? Para quienes no comparten una visión tan mágica de la navidad y la consideran una simple invención capitalista destinada a disparar las ventas de todos los sectores, esto sonará como una evidencia más con la cual poder reforzar sus creencias. Pero para aquellos que optan por confiar ciegamente en Santa Claus, Saint Nikolaus, Papa Noel (o como se le nombre en vuestro país de procedencia), una de las tradiciones más importantes durante estos días en los cuales las calles son inundadas por las risas de los niños (como diría Mariah Carey), es dedicar unas horas a vestirnos con nuestras mejores galas por el mero hecho de reflejar en la superficie tanto resplandor sentimos en nuestro corazones al reunirnos junto a nuestros seres más queridos.

En cierto modo es una muestra afectiva de respeto y amor hacia esas personas con quien celebramos las fiestas ya que al igual que envolvemos un libro, unos zapatos o una pulsera; envolvernos en nuestro particular papel de regalo es mostrarnos como un presente ante ellos y reconocernos como tal ante nosotros mismos aumentando gracias a la poderosa herramienta que es la ropa nuestra autoestima.

Para muchos es la época más feliz del año y por eso mismo es que nuestra faceta más solidaria (en todos los sentidos) sale a la luz durante estas fechas, claro ejemplo es que todo aquello que una semana antes considerábamos irritante ahora lo vemos con ojos de adoración como pueden ser los centros comerciales rebosantes de los más pequeños correteando llenos de ilusión; los publicistas que te ofrecen sonrientemente un panfleto que realmente no necesitas felicitándote la navidad; o las personas que se pasean cantando estridentemente por las frías calles invernales “blanca navidad”, “mi burrito sabanero” o “los peces en el río”. De pronto todo parece milagrosamente alegre lo que considera la tendencia la costumbre especialmente popular en Estados Unidos de utilizar jerséis recargados con motivos festivos hasta el punto de ser considerados como “feos” durante Nochebuena.

Las raíces de este peculiar hábito se remontan hasta la década de la postguerra, los cincuenta, cuando comenzaron siendo simples prendas estampadas con siluetas de renos, copos de nieve u ornamentos como tantos otros artículos.

No obstante, al igual que ocurrió con la mayoría de ellos con la masificación consumista de la navidad los ugly sweaters se llevaron al extremo de lo ostentoso rápidamente acabando con ejemplares tan recargados como los que se ven hoy en día que incluyen hasta accesos para pilas que alimentan luces o reproductores de música.

El hecho de que estos sean acertadamente ridículos no hecha para atrás a sus portadores sino que la comedia reina entre las cenas navideñas pues en la actualidad las familias hasta organizan concursos en los que los ganadores son aquellos con el look más estridente y los coronados como perdedores resultan los más recatados. Tan fundamental resulta dar caza a la prenda lo más imperfecta posible para la llegada de las últimas semanas del mes de diciembre que muchas de las reuniones navideñas norteamericanas giran en torno a ello. Incluso son varias las celebridades de renombre influyente a niveles internacionales que se suman al reto y lo comparten con sus seguidores en sus respectivas plataformas sociales como fue el caso de Ryan Reynolds al ser tendido una trampa por sus allegados amigos: los actores Jake Gyllenhaal y Hugh Jackman quienes le convencieron de llevar un horrible jersey navideño pensando que ellos también iría igualmente espantosos a la celebración.

For those who do not share such a magical vision of Christmas and consider it a simple capitalist invention destined to boost sales in all sectors, this will sound like one more piece of evidence with which to reinforce their beliefs. But for those who choose to blindly trust Santa Claus, Saint Nikolaus, Papa Noel (or whatever he is called in your country of origin), one of the most important traditions during these days in which the streets are flooded by the laughter of children (as Mariah Carey would say), is to spend a few hours dressing in our best clothes for the mere fact of reflecting on the surface so much radiance as we feel in our hearts when we get together with our loved ones.

Suddenly everything seems miraculously happy even the trend which is especially popular in the United States of wearing sweaters loaded with festive motifs to the point of being considered "ugly" on Christmas Eve.

The roots of this peculiar habit go back to the post-war decade, the 1950s, when they began as simple garments stamped with silhouettes of reindeer, snowflakes or ornaments like so many other items.

The fact that these are rightly ridiculous does not back off their wearers, but rather make comedy reing among Christmas dinners, because nowadays families even organize contests in which the winners are those with the most strident look and those crowned as losers are the most modest. It is so essential to hunt down the most imperfect sweater possible for the arrival of the last weeks of December, that many of the North American Christmas gatherings revolve around it. There are even several internationally renowned influential celebrities who join the challenge and share it with their followers on their respective social platforms, as was the case of Ryan Reynolds when he was set up by his close friends: the actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman who convinced him to wear a horrible Christmas attire thinking that they too would asist the celebration equally as horrible.
