More than a designer's sister.

Vestidos, perfumes y guerras:

Hija, hermana, musa, heroína, guerrera y aliada. Son algunas de las múltiples cosas que Catherine Dior encarnó durante su vida. Sin embargo (y muy a mí pesar), simplemente ha pasado a la historia como la hermana menor del gran creador de la marca de lujo Dior, Christian Dior.

Siempre se ha categorizado al mediano de los hermanos como el olvidado, pero en el caso de esta familia, fue la más pequeña de un total de cinco la cual ha resultado en cierta medida desatendida por el público. Su vida dio comienzo un indeterminado día del año 1917 en el seno de una estirpe adinerada que a los pocos años perdió toda su fortuna a causa de inversiones fallidas en la industria inmobiliaria por lo que tuvieron que dejar de lado su estilo de vida jocoso.

Al alcanzar la mayoría de edad la joven Dior abandonó la casa señorial de su familia situada en Granville, Villa Les Rhumbs, para asentarse en una no sólo poco acogedora, sino devastada casa de campo en la Provenza francesa.

No obstante, duró poco su estancia en aquel destartalado lugar, puesto que a los pocos años cambió su “humilde morada” por un nuevo hogar en Paris junto a su hermano Christian donde se dedicó al oficio de venta de accesorios para una maison de moda a la par que él trataba de ganarse su sitio en el sector difundiendo sus bocetos.

Al estallar la II Guerra Mundial, ambos de trasladaron al sur de Francia para volcarse en el singular oficio de cultivar vegetales y hortalizas con fines económicos como sustento financiero, hasta que Christian decidió regresar a la capital en busca de ese ambiente lúcido típico del lugar. Fue entonces, durante su soledad que nuestra protagonista estrechó lazos más allá de la amistad con Hervé des Charbonneries, un hombre casado, padre de tres hijos y miembro de La Resistencia.

Este romance la condujo a ingresar como miembro de dicho grupo en 1941 bajo el seudónimo de Caro. Aunque esta aventura de pasión, amor y justicia social tuvo un precio muy elevado para Catherine, ya que a los tres años de anunciarse como hermana de La Resistencia fue arrestada tras ser torturada cruelmente por la Gestapo para sonsacarla información, lo que fue en vano puesto que el espíritu implacable de Caro se mantuvo fiel en todo momento a sus compatriotas.

Posteriormente fue aprisionada en una cárcel francesa de dominio alemán y pese a los frenéticos e inútiles intentos de su hermano mayor de liberarla con ayuda de sus contactos con un diplomático suizo, Raoul Nordling, en agosto de ese mismo año comenzó lo que sería un largo recorrido a través de campos de concentración femeninos. Afortunadamente en 1945, durante una “marcha de la muerte” que los detenidos se vieron forzados a realizar debido a la inminente aproximación de Los Aliados, la menor de la dinastía Dior logró escapar del as potencias Nazis.

Ahora bien, el sobrenombre de “Miss Dior” le fue fue otorgado a Catherine tras el debut de la colección New Look de la desde entonces consagrada firma de alta costura Dior en febrero de 1947, cuando durante una reunión entre el diseñador de la marca y su colega y musa: Mizza Bricard esta irrumpió en la sala donde se estaba celebrando y Bricard exclamó con su entrada “¡Ah, por fin! ¡Miss Dior!”.

Desde ese instante la que era Catherine Dior fue sustituida por “Miss Dior” ; del mismo modo la primera fragancia Dior con aroma a flores con sutiles tintes a cuero y gálbano, y el vestido de noche sin mangas irónicamente confeccionado en 1949 adoptaron el mismo nombre.

It is commonly said that the middle child is the forgotten one, but in the case of this family, it was the smallest of a total of five siblings who was omewhat neglected by the public. Her life began on an indeterminate day in 1917 in the bosom of a wealthy lineage that after a few years lost all their fortune due to failed investments in real estate, so they were made to put aside their jocular lifestyle.

Fortunately in 1945, during a "death march" that the detainees were forced to carry out due to the imminent approach of the Allies, the youngest of the Dior dynasty managed to escape from the Nazi powers.

Now, the nickname of "Miss Dior" was given to Catherine after the debut of the New Look collection of the since then consecrated haute couture firm: Dior in February 1947, when during a meeting between the designer of the brand and his colleague and muse: Mizza Bricard she broke into the room where it was being held and Bricard exclaimed with her entrance “Ah, here! Miss Dior! ”.
